3) Interconnect Application and Permits

Before you order your equipment, you should apply for all the approvals you need to ensure that the system you have designed can be activated when it's built and that you will qualify for any incentives.

You will need several approvals before you can proceed. You MUST receive approval from the utility BEFORE purchasing any equipment!

Utility Interconnect

Approval from your electric utility is required to connect to the grid.  We advise that you do this BEFORE purchasing ANY equipment.  The utility is concerned about the capacity of their transformers and wires that make up the grid and that the system you are connecting meets all their safety requirements.  There are two approvals needed, one before you start and one when you are done and ready to activate your system.  Historically the first application has taken as little as a few days and as much as two months.  HAREI has tools to help generate the documentation needed and detailed instructions.  For more on interconnect applications go here.

Building  and Electrical Permits

Most cities and towns will require a building permit for the installation of racks and panels and all require an electrical permit for the wiring.   Some require committee approval particularly in historic districts or where the installation might be perceived as an eye sore (e.g. visible ground array in the front yard).  How rigorous the requirements are varies from municipality to municipality.  It is not a bad idea to meet with your building inspector to ensure you provide what they expect without needing to go thru several revisions.  Other HAREI member in your city/town may also be able to provided advice.  Building departments typically turns around permits in a week or two.  Committee approval, if needed,  can take several months.  For more on building and electrical permit applications go here.

Rebates

The $1000 NH state solar rebates are intermittently funded.   There may be rebates if you are upgrading your electrical panel.  Visit your utility’s web site for rebates that you might qualify for.

When these applications have been approved, it's time to order and install your system!
